Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in the Jamaican Language @Dec 2 2025 04:52 PM
KINGSTON, DECEMBER 1, 2025: UNICEF today launched a groundbreaking video featuring Jamaican children presenting the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in the Jamaican language, making child rights more accessible, relatable, and meaningful to young people across the island. The launch took place at the Caribbean Child Research Conference, which this year turns the spotlight on children living on the margin. The video is part of UNICEF’s commitment to ensuring that every child understands their rights in a way that is both culturally relevant and child-friendly. By using the Jamaican language, the initiative breaks down barriers of communication and reinforces the importance of language inclusion in public education. “Every child has the right to know their rights,” said Olga Isaza, UNICEF Jamaica Representative. “When children hear the CRC in the language they speak at home, it strengthens their sense of belonging and understanding. This is not only about language but also about dignity, identity, and inclusion,” she added. Primary-aged children participated in the production, proudly lending their voices and enthusiasm to the project. Their excitement reflected the power of making learning interactive and engaging while guaranteeing that children's rights are not distant or abstract but simple and understandable. “By framing child rights in the Jamaican language, UNICEF is advancing an innovative approach that connects with children on their own terms, ensuring no child is left behind,” said Joan Andrea Hutchinson, Jamaican language advocate, who introduced the video and supported the children who participated. “This initiative affirms that every child’s voice matters, and every child deserves to grow up knowing their rights in a language that resonates with them,” she noted. The launch at the Caribbean Child Research Conference underscores a collective commitment to breaking down barriers for children, especially those who are most vulnerable, and ensuring their rights are protected, promoted, and upheld. ================================ Don't forget to like, share, and subscribe.
